About

Welcome! I’m Alexandra, the author behind Flythesevenseas.

I started this blog in 2013 to share my observations, experiences and discoveries of life in Germany. While you could say that I’ve started to ‘find my way’ here, I’m still keen to share my perspective on experiencing german culture, living here and places I’ve discover along the way.

My story

I was born and raised in Sydney and proud to call myself an Australian with Greek heritage. The only plate smashing I do is in the kitchen.

In 2011 I decided that it was time to make a leap of courage across the oceans and move my life to the northern hemisphere – German bound. The decision was led by long-held dreams and my precious man that lived 16,000 km away. I did not allow my complete lack of knowledge for the German language get in my way.

The separation from my family and friends was, and is, not easy but what gets me through this is the thrill of new experiences ahead of me, the beautiful moments with my partner and the constant back-and-forth of texts, emails and calls with the special ones back home.

Since arriving in December 2011, I’ve lived Dรผsseldorf, then moved to Munich and have called Berlin home since 2017.

I am an ambitious dreamer, who finds it hard to sit still.

I have an addiction to reading and collecting recipes and love experimenting with ingredients and flavours. I’m a bit of a whole foods snob – putting a basket full of fresh produce in front of me is dangerous.

I find inspiration through landscapes, culture, traditions, language and people and could easily spend hours staring into the wonders of the sky.

Reach out to me if you’d like to collaborate on a project together, talk about expat life, share your german cultural experiences or just to have a chat.

Happy reading,

Alexandra.

  1. Hi Alexandra!

    Welcome to Germany, then!

It is amazing where following your dreams can take you, isn’t it?

My partner is US-American and made that same leap, also in 2011 – just from the USA to Hamburg, which is where we live. After his visitor visa ran out the first time we stayed in Ireland for three months. In January 2012 he got a residence permit for one year. Now we are taking one step at a time. ๐Ÿ™‚

I suppose, some of that may sound familiar to you…

Thank you for stopping by at my blog and pleased to meet you!

    Much love,
    Steffi

  2. Hi Alexandra!

    Happy New Year!
I am just stopping by to share something that might b interesting for you.
I just checked out a new follower and it turned out that she is a lady from Sydney. Her name is Luisa and guess what? She just moved to Munich. I immediately thought of you. Maybe her blog is of interest for you? Here is the link in case you would like to take a look:

    Much love,

    1. Hi Steffi!

Happy New Year to you too – I hope you’ve had a good start to 2014!

Thank you for the thought, and the tip. Randomly, Luisa and I made contact a few weeks ago, but I’ll definitely check out her blog! Somehow the Aussies have a way of finding one another.

      Cheers,
      Alex

    2. Great that you already found each other Alex!
It was my thought, that it might be a nice and supportive contact.
Obviously the “Aussie radar” was much faster than me… ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Have a peaceful evening,
      Steffi

  3. I keep finding Australians in Germany … as I’ve also found many Germans in Australia. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thank you for liking my recent post about “G-E-M-S” in Munich, Alexandra. I’ve come to your blog and I immediately followed: Australian/Sydney woman living life and finding new things in Munich? Yes! The world is a small small place; I’ve spent a significant time in Australia, mostly in the urban centres and mostly in Sydney (re. Eastwood, actually, on the Northern train-line). I hope this message finds you well, and I look forward to reading your blog. Freu’ich mich sehr drauf! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Hi Alexandra!! First of all, thank you for stopping by Packing my Suitcase! Second, your story is pretty cool, I hope you are not breaking too much plates here in Munich hahaha… third I cant believe we live in the same city, we have a lot in common then! If you ever want to meet for a coffee let me know ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Hi! There hasn’t been any plate breaking (yet) – but some serviette-throwing (apparently this is the greek-german way of expressing the same feelings). Would love to meet for a coffee and hear more of your story!
